Default A/C...what are the chances?

My A/C has not been charged during the time that I've owned the car. What are the chances that, once I charge it, it will work fine and have no leaks? Has anyone else been this lucky?

Your chances are slim to none. The refrigerant escaped somehow. Does your compressor cycle on? It may work for a while until it all leaks out.

My car was not charged in over 4 years (R12). I put a cheap fitting on the low side and threw 2 cans of R134A in. Cold as hell. I might have been lucky. I didnt evacuate the system so I think I got really lucky. Make sure if you try it that you put some oil into the system as well. The other thing you might run into is the fact that the DIY home kits only work if the compressor is on. Without sufficient pressure in the system, the compressor will not come on. Good luck, sorry for the ramble...

If you don't get the air out of the system the oil mixes with it and causes sludge, which in turn will eventually "burn out"the compresor.

My compressor used to cycle on--up until about two weeks ago. Then I ran the A/C for a while one day, praying that it would get cold. Now, when I turn the A/C on, it does nothing.
