Default Timing Gear Drive

Would it be worth it to buy a timing gear set instead of the traditional chain or double chain? I've seen a couple but they say you need to machine something....doesn't say what you need to machine though.
Also, would an electric fan from NAPA rated for a big block Ford work on my 85?
yeah i'm full of questions for my mustang.
More to come, thanks guys.

The gear drive will be very loud, like a blower. If you don't mind the noise, go for it.

there not realy worth it you will have to grind off the the the lip on the timing cover for it to fit and thay are veary noisy cause the idler gears in the middle rub the timing cover and it make a nasty screetching sound dont do it take it from me i had a set in my 87 4 about 200 miles !

they give you more precise HP at higher RPM's but you lose a couple of horse.

Just stick w/ a double roller. Cloyes makes a good one that's not too much. O'reilly's carries them for around 40 bux.

I heard on the newer fuel injectied mustangs (86 and up) you can't use a gear drive cus of the knock sensor. Is that true?

partially, unless you building a serious motor, timing chain is fine, but I use gear drives and the best solution which is the belt drives but they are big money, gives me alot of flexibility on cam timing, but for 99% of people a cloyes true double roller is fine

I'm running a gear drive currently on my 5.0, didnt have to machine anything nor does it scrape against the timing cover.

And I sure do love the noice when i'm driving down the road.
