i would set it at standard timing. Because if you retard or Advance it you may be un-happy with the results. Advancing it is going to bring the power lower in Rpm range, retarding it will move it higher up.

Oh, the distributor. lol. sorry bout that. Just make sure its not a tooth off on the gears where it meshes up with the cam gear. Sometimes if you get it a tooth off you'll be running a little more or a little less timing that you think you are. If its backfiring and you set the cam at the recomended specs, its most likely ignition timing. Check it with a light and see where its at. Most guys on here set their cars to about 14* total.

I just set it at 10 degrees,(today) it holds a good idle(about 700). I just replaced the header gasket on the pass.side. after that i drove it and it had kind-of-a skip when cruising around 2000rpms. so thats when I adjusted the timing to 10degrees. When I got the car it surged real bad from about 500-1200 rpms. Then the timing was around 17degrees .I didnt put the cam in, it was in when I got it.

Oh, well call the guy you bought if from and see if he knows where the cam was installed at, what timing.

You could also be running a little lean. Ive heard of cars backfiring when running lean.

How often does it do it? Like under excelleration? Cruising, what?

It doesnt do it when I accelerate, its when I let off. I asked the guy I got it from when I first got the car and he said it was in ther when he got it (he only had it for like 6-8months. so I thing that trying to find that out will be a lost cause. However I do think its runnin lean so I'll try to advance it to aroun 13-14degrees. Its just hard to read the marks on the block.(I've already marked the balancer)

Yea, that sounds more like a fuel pressure problem to me, do you have an adjustable regulator and a gauge by any chance to check where its at?

If you dont have that just check ur plugs. If they're black, really black then its running rich, white is lean. Thats a good indicator where your at.
