could be something sticking. I have the same problem after my car overheated and it sounded ugly. get a can of motor flush along with some lucas and 4 quarts of oil of your choice and a filter and give it a good flush. Took care of my knocking.

If you are worried about a rod knocking there is a little trick you can use. Learned it from a old *** mechanic I know. Take a wooden rod (something around the size of a hammer handel) and place and hold it against the block below the heads, around where the rods would be located, the sound will travel up along the wood and if you place your ear to the it you will hear quite clearly if a rod is knocking. I know it sounds weird with all the high speed sh*t out there but it works.
