Default "free rev situation"

ok i was lookin at a magzine and noticed that this guy that has a stang drag car had to have his motoor torn down for spec inspection, he said he noticed the some bent valves greatly hurt power due to a free rev inccident. what is a free rev inccident and how did it bend the valves, they hit the pistons or something thanks a lot

Sounds like something where he thought he was in first gear, slammed the gas and it was in neutral?

Ha, i dunno though.

free reving is when you womp on the throttle and the car doesnt move. either the rear tires are off the ground or the car isnt in gear

Ahh, I was close for a guess. That would make more sense that the tires were off the ground, at least i hope he wouldn't be a race car drive and out of gear.[sm=smiley12.gif]

with a drag car, it's more likely he missed a shift and the engine overrevved way high and the valves went into valve float and were hit by the pistons since the valves weren't closing properly. another reason could be he broke something in the driveline and let the rpms go sky high before he could lift. that's why it's always good to have a high rev limiter to keep the rpms from going to the moon when something breaks or you miss a shift.
