Default which Heads?

There is alot of confusion as to which heads are the best for 5.0s. I have a '95 5.0, which heads will be the best overall choice for me? What the hell do those numbers on flow charts mean. What number are you supposed to look at to compare for most horsepower and torque. Can someone make sense of this to me?
oh yea and what does porting heads mean?
Thanks

Id go for AFR 165's with stock pistons or 185's if your pistons are aftermarket or notched more.
Id be willing to bet most on here will agree with me.

The flow numbers on charts are a way of how to describe how many Cubic Foot Per Minute of air will flow through one of the ports. Basically they see about how much air will fit through a port in one minute, and they units of measure for the air is Cubic Foot.

Then they have the different lifts, like .100, .200, .300....thats how much the valve in the head opens up. Obviously, the more open the valve, the more air that can flow through. They measure this in thousands. Think about it this way .250 is 1/4 inch of lift on the valve, .500 is half an inch, and so on.

Why, E7's of course!

Just kidding. I've heard that the AFRs are the best bang for the buck. For cars not seriously modified, the 165s are supposedly the way to go.

I would go w/ the Twisted Wedge. I like the extra clearance from the rotated valves (and larger valves). If you know how to port yourself, you can make them flow like all hell for cheap.

Aint that the truth, ive heard of totally worked Twisted wedges flowing 300+, but that is way way way way to much for a mild 302. That thing will have no bottom end. Go with some AFR 165's or stock Twisted Wedges.

Would i be hurting power if i went with the AFR 185s? Im not running a s/c and the extent of my mods is the intake manifold. Im fairly new at this so excuse this question: What does porting mean? and can you port an intake manifold?

yes you can port an intake manifold.

and the 185's are if your going to get heavier mods, Plus you have to notch your pistons.

Simply put, it means enlarging/shaping the intake and exhaust ports in heads in order to make them flow better.
