Your fuel gauge is electronic and the sending unit is electrical.... it can break... mine did and had to be replaced...

i think silver 91gt is right, theres a screeching noise? im pretty sure that has nothing to do with your fuel gauge.
was the screeching a loud pitch squeal or a grinding when you tried to start it.

That sucked so bad. I was like 200 miles away from home. I had to try on like 10 belts to get one that would bypass it tightly enough.
