94 gt convertible, how to go low 13's
I just picked up my first mustang this week for about $2000. Its a 1994 GT 5.0 auto convertible. It's bone stock except for a new transmission that was installed a few months ago. My goal is to get the car to 12.7-13.0 range without nitrous. I have only dealt with Gm and LT motors before. So I could use some help as far as what's a good set of gears, head, cam, intake, headers. I am really interested in the side exhausts I've seen some guys running.
Let me know guys!
Thanks,
Devon

Well if you're talking about C/H/I then you seem like you have a few $$$ to spend on this... so you shouldn't have any problems in that department.
First semi-major problem would be the car itself... it's heavy (about 3500 lbs or so if I recall correctly) and the convertible is a bit heavier. Also, with that year many bolt-ons built for 5.0s wont fit (like superchargers, etc) and they have to be certain models or types to actually fit in the cramped compartment. But that's not too much of an issue.
If you're looking for power, drop the exhaust and add a new set of headers, x-pipes, and catback exhaust. That will free up some HP. You can also advance the timing a few degrees. Your timing is probably set at 10 degreed BTDC. By changing that from 10 degrees to, say, 16 degrees, you will gain an extra 18 or so HP (estimates are from 18 - 24 HP.) As you stated, you will want to change gears too. The basic thing most people say is 3.73 gears for a manual and 4.10s for an auto. I personally have 3.73 in my auto but I do some highway driving and I like them anyway. As far as companies get a set of Ford Racing gears. So between the gears and the exhaust (headers, x-pipe, exhaust) you're probably looking at $1,000.
When it comes to the C/H/I there are many options. Personally I love the Trickflow setup... either Street Heat ort Twisted Wedge. Depending on where you look, you can get the upper and lower intake, cam, heads, and other minor parts for about $2,000 more.
So for $3,000 you will have a fairly decent setup right there. Of course, as you move up you will want to start messing with suspension, control arms, subframe, etc... and that will add a few bucks here and there.
Then there's the obvious answer of a supercharger. You can get a powerdyne for about $1,800 (not recommend), or a nice Paxton, Procharger, or Vortech for $2,500 or so. Those will obviously add some mean HP, just make sure you get a good tune with it.
Basically, there are a lot of different ways you can go with this to make it work. There are also a ton of options for each little thing along the way. It all comes down to personal preference and what you want to do with the car. If you ask 100 people you will get 100 different answers. And most of them will be right!

RE: 94 gt convertible, how to go low 13's
Thanks guys. I MAY have about 3-5k. depends on how well my home refi goes in October. I am all for the exhaust, I guess they have long tube headers. What would be a good h/c combo thats decent street manners? I dont care about how loud it may be. Also, i wasnt aware that the SC was that inexpensive. I had 3.73 gears in my auto transam I sold. They were great! I definately wouldnt want 4.10's ( i think). So This thing is a dog right now, correct? What like high 14's? 15's?
I guess I'll be doing all of it once as soon as the cash gets here. I guess I need 300+rwhp to move this thing like I need it to.

RE: 94 gt convertible, how to go low 13's
I just got back from the track this past weekend, I have a 95 Gt vert auto as well. Basically the same as your 94'. I have 3.73's and a transgo shift as well as cold air intake. The rest is all stock. The quickest I have ran is 15.5 @ around 90 mph or so. Its not much to brag about, since we have one of the heaviest mustangs around, not to mention the auto is draining HP's from us. I have a hell of time hooking up too, but Im running street tires out there also.
here is some good info on stock 95 auto from AFR: http://www.airflowresearch.com/95mustang_dyno.php
They are getting a 16.01 with an auto coupe, which i think is damn slow, but maybe right.
So, the first things i would do is gears, shift kit, exhaust. Then comes H/C/I, but make sure you get some tires that will stick (goes without saying). 4:10s are good too, but my 3.73's are just fine for mine since I am on the highway as well. Good luck and keep us updated, I want to HP's down the road also and interested in what you come up with.

But either way, you should be pretty damned close to where you wanna be if you plan on spending $5k.
