Default Clutch Problems?

idk, this is probably a noob question but i don't know much about the tranny or clutch. Anyway, when the car is not running, should i be able to shift through the gears without pressing the clutch? I noticed this today, so i got out and rocked the car a little, and first was still catching (the car wouldn't roll). But then i got back in it and was able to shift through them again without pressing the clutch.
