For nearly 10 years I didn't use a timing light. The one I had was junk. It shocked me on more than one occassion.
I only have one now because the tweecer allows modification of timing, but all the tables include base timing. Setting base to 10 means that the datalogs are accurate.
Timing by ear is not for the faint of heart

when my dad was young they never used one, they did not have the money to buy one, you just kept advancing the timing till it would ping then back it down a hair.

If you don't disconnect the spout, the computer adds/subtracts timing to compensate. Removing the spout connector allows you to set the base timing and then the computer adds from there at WOT, etc.
