try some pulleys...upgrade your exhaust to 87-93 style...add a 3.73 gears...remove the stock clutch fan and go with an electric fan or install a flex fan....be sure to get the one for the reverse rotation waterpump if you do. drop in a k&amp;n filter in your stock air cleaner...make sure your fresh air hoses are hooked to your air cleaner and drive it like you stole it!</P>

I did just as puln away says. Now I regret it. These mods will be noticeable, but if you buy a good set of aftermarket heads and intake, you will notice a vast improvement immediately, and the other stuff mentioned will just be icing on the cake as you add them.

MAKAROVBOY,</P>

Riddle me this, why would you recommend to this guy to go out and spend 1000.00 or more on heads and intake when he has STOCK 85 exhaust? (did you know that 85 gts came with SINGLE exhaust that splits in the back with duel tailpipes? )STOCK cam? STOCK gears etc. I hope he does not take your advise or his car will run like s^&amp;t.He asked what are the first things to do to his car! </P>

Souron, maximize what you have. your car will be faster upgrading what i told you than it would be installing heads and intake! After you have done this, then you can upgrade your motor. You won't be sorry!</P>

Puln away, I understand your reasoning, that's why I did it about 7 or 8 yrs ago. The heads and intake aren't going to hurt (although I agree that if he's going for top dog, do an e303 or such while it's apart), but all the mods I did first, gears, pulleys, electric fan, k&n, headers, cat back system, etc., cost me as much or more than a good set of heads, which would have increased the hp as much or more than the little stuff.

All I'm saying is, if you get the big stuff out of the way first, you can put on headers next month, cat backs follow a little later, go for the electric fan, etc. You're surely not going to lose performance with the heads and intake first, and even the stock 5.0 cam can take the increase. I put heads, manifold and cam in my wife's vette. HUGE difference. Still haven't gotten around to headers, electric fan, etc. ('79 Calif vette I might add. Not exactly a performance leader with all the smog sh*#).

By the way, puln away, why would you tell him to put 3.73's in when you don't know if he has an aod or a 5 speed, as you stated to someone else on another post that without all that info, don't listen to anyone as there is bad advice on this site? Sounds like bad advice to me. Some guys with sticks prefer the 3.55's, while others with aod's swear by the 4.10's. Why the 3.73's. Good starter gears for the average joe, then decide if they're good for you after you buy them?

Do some more research, souron, but don't listen to him or me until you look at a lot of posts and do some reading.

Read the current CarCraft. Heads, intake manifold, carb, and headers added 180 hp to an otherwise bone stock 302. Now tell me, what's wrong with the stock cam?

I'd say do the big stuff if you've got a couple grand now. Then each little piece added later will make a bigger improvement. The heads are about the most restrictive piece.

Thank you horatio102. When I had the gears put in, the guy at the speed shop told I'd be better to invest in heads first. I should have listened.

You guys kill me! ( if your going for top dog then use a e-303? ) No top dogs use e-cams! Auto or manual trans the best all around gear is a 3.73. The 3.55s would be better for the 5 speed if he never planed to upgrade the motor later. as for a 4.10 and the auto, you will burn up the over drive children! you will have to upgrade your aod to keep this from happening. ( this is not cheap! )</P>

Read the current car craft? added 180 to a stock 302? Are you telling him that he would have 390hp if he adds heads, intake and carb? What a joke! </P>

Thank you Horatio!<IMG src=smileys/smiley19.gif border="0"></P>

With just the things I recommended, mysons car runs 12.80's ( valve covers have never been off, thank you! ) My car runs 9.30's on drag radials.....but i don't know s#$t!</P>

It's clear to me that you guys don't have a clue. i posted here to help some of the young guyswho want to learn from years of racing mustangs. Its clear that you guys are way smarter than I! I don't have the temperment to play with you. I am content just knowing you guys are so smart and your cars are so fast<IMG src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0">......*** <IMG src=smileys/smiley8.gif border="0">s</P><edited><editID>PULN AWAY</editID><editDate>37803.0400578704</editDate></edited>

Default 5.0L mods?

What the hell is your problem? Did you go pick up the copy of Car Craft? I've got it sitting in front of me right now.

Let me quote the second paragraph:

"The key to this remarkable achievement is simple: one awesome set of cylinder heads. Heads so good in fact, that there are worth about 100hp over a set of stock 5.0L Mustang heads on their own."

100 hp for under $1400.

Here's what they used:
stock '91 5.0L short block
AFR 165 heads PN 1472 from AFR for $1325
Comp Cams 1.7:1 roller rockers PN 1054-16 from Jeg's for $378.99 (Forgot about that)
Arp head bolts $37.99
Fel-Pro head and intake gaskets $81.97
Weiand intake manifold $165.99
Road Demon Jr. Carb $259.95
and Doug's Tri-Y headers for $549.95

No, I'm not telling you that he would have 390hp if he adds heads, intake, and a carb. I'm telling you that he'd have 405 with said items plus rockers and headers.

Sorry, I forgot the roller rockers. Without them they still got 382hp and 368 ft-lbs.

So 405 hp at 6,200 and 380 ft-lbs at 4,300 doesn't sound good to you for $2,799.84? It's more than I thought, but it's still a heck of a deal considering the rest of the engine is OE stuff.

Next time somebody gives you a source and then some information, perhaps you could look up the source and learn something before calling others clueless. There's a lot more I could say about this, but I'll refrain. Who's the *** now?
