Default 5.8 transplant

I am thinking about dropping a 5.8L into my 95 3.8L. I am trying to build a cobra R clone, but in a sheepskin coat. Does anyone have experience with the 5.8L? Are there any surprises I should be aware of before dropping in the 5.8L? I am looking for 450-500hp. My car now is an automatic, and I would like to keep it that way? Which auto is a good match to the 5.8L? Sorry for all the questions, I have always been a GM guy all my life and this is my first FOMOCO project.

the 351s are great motors. Look for a 94+ core, your going to want a roller motor for a Cobra R clone. Your going to need a new oil pan for a Fox chassis, some 351 Headers for the 79-93 Mustang, a little taller hood, i think the Cobra R hood will clear it. Im assuming your going with a EFI set up, so your going to need to find a 5.8 intake. The 302 EFI harness should work with it, make sure your cam is a 302 firing order though. The 351W is basically a taller deck 302, but the block is stronger and it has a greater potential for performance. Some other guys on here should be able to give you the rest of what your going to need. Good luck.

I stand corrected, he's right. Ford adopted the 351 firing roder in like early 80's.

the ho's used the 351w firing order because the ho cam was originally an off shore marine cam for inboard 351's. (boat cam for you that didnt understand that)

I have a thorough writeup on the swap into a FOX Mustang, which should be very similar to yours.

It is on my website, provided in my sig.

I will post it up later, or do a search.

I can't get to my site from work.
