Default Need Help!

I failed my emissions test, and I'm on a tight budget so I need advice as what to replace to help me pass emmissions. Or atleast what is not too difficult to do to make emissions passable. My hydrocarbons are what failed. The standard is 0.80 and I was at 1.76 . The CO standard was 15.0 and I had 11.0 so I passed that one. CO2 was at 432.5 and NOx was not available. I have new plugs ,cap, rotor, my spark plugs still are good(1.5years old). Ihad new ogygen sensors put on 2 years ago and pcv valve at the same time. I have have been running fuel injection cleaner through the car, and my timing was at 11* at the time of emmissions testing. Any ideas as to what I need to pass test. I'd prefer to buy the necessary items myself if not too expensive and install myself. I'm on a tight budget so I cant really bring it to a mechanic too fix. I have until January too pass. Thanks for any help !

Since hydrocarbons are unburnt fuel does it make sense to go after the areas that could increase the burning of fuel? And what is the best way of doing that?

Anybody have a link to info on why lowering the timing could help in passing emissions? Since I was at 11* do you think 9* would be of any benefit? Or what else do you think the problem is?

Retarding the timing is not going to help. Think of trucks and buses. Those engines usually run lower timing to increase the torque and how do they smell? Hydrocarbons too high means the fuel is being insufficiently burned. Things that would help fuel milage will help your problem. Might try slightly advancing the timing, make sure you have good air flow, clean IAC valve, EGR working properly, anything that could make it run a little leaner than it is. Do you still have catalytic converters? If so, they may be shot. I am running all stock, and live where emissions testing is not an issue, so I don't fight this problem. However, I recall seeing some posts on this site referring to some additive that can be purchased that will help with emmisions. It supposedly came from car parts stores. Do a search on this site on Pass and Emissions and see what you find.

Good Luck

Maybe your cats are not working efficiently. I've owned mine for 14 years and only once did it not fail. B/C there were no cats on it. (just wanted to see how it would do) It passes w/ much room and my fuel system is far from stock.
