Default Sorry, but I need help.

Sorry, this isn't exactly a Mustang question, but I am hoping that some of you 5.0 guys can help me. I have an '89 F150 with the 5.0 and an AOD. I need to do some work on it. I seem to have lost the head of the second from the rear head bolt under the exhaust manifold. So, I'll absolutely need to have some head work done. Here's the quandry (sp?). I have a set of heads on the shelf of unknown origin. I will have to check the casting number, but I am pretty sure they aren't the same as what's on the truck right now. And, again, not sure, but I think the combustion chamber may be different - one is open and one is heart-shaped, IIRC. So, is there somewhere to find out what heads I can use on this motor without trouble? Or somewhere that says what is compatible with what? Or something like that?

Thanks for any help that anybody can provide.

if its only a problem with the head bolts, simply pull the head off and twist out the bolt with a set of vise grips. unless ofcourse i didnt understand WTF you said...

seems to me like you just need to pull the head off and extract that bolt from the block

Those heads perform worse then the factory truck heads. The E6's are only good for passing emissions.

That's exactly the information I was looking for. Good or not. Turns out not. Okay, they'll be set aside for boat anchors or wheel chocks or something like that.

I didn't break the head of the bolt off. It was there 140k ago, but it is not there now. The bolt could not have come out, as the exhaust manifold is in the way, so that means the head must have snapped off. I'm guessing it happened when it overheated, cuz that's the only thing I can think of. The reason I was asking about these other heads is that if I can avoid machine work, it would be great. Having to have machine work done means time and money. Doesn't look that way, as I think the head bolt broke and the head is warped now. I guess I'll know more when I get it apart. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will still be flat to within spec and will just put a new set of bolts in and some head gaskets and call it a day.

Actually, things just got a little easier. I just spoke to my dad. I am getting ready for a trip to NY. On the way back, I'll fly into KCMO and get his truck to drive while mine is apart, so that'll help with the time part; I'll be able to work on it a little bit each evening instead of having to take a week off to deal with it. Now I just have to work out the money part.

Thanks for the help everybody!

BTW, if anybody thinks of any other helpful hints (such as find a big ditch for the ol' f150), I'll still take 'em. Thanks again.

Here's a couple of pics of the head bolt at the rear of the head and the head bolt that is headless. These were taken from underneath. The dull brown cylindrical thing at the lower left of the first pic is the starter covered in stuff that has seemingly sprayed out of the head gasket area.

Oh, yeah. It's gonna cost me $150 to have one head surface ground and valve job and $225 for both. Not bad, unless you don't have that much.
