Water pump, radiator, timing, head gaskets, what exactly is it doing? From the time it starts cold to the time it overheats.

doubt that its any gasket.. i have all new gaskets all the way around. Well, like i said.. motor only has 1700 miles on it. And when i got the car back it was pinging and heating up. So i took it back to the mechanic and he turned down my timing. It still pinged. So he turned it down again. It doesn't ping anymore but it still heats up when i'm in traffic or even if i just mash on the gas real hard. My temp rises to over 230 and sometimes drops and sometimes doesn't. But even when the water temperature isn't all that high, when i turn the car off after driving it for a while i always have coolant spilling out(not that much but it comes out of the reserve). And i have noticed that there are some drop of coolant under my car underneath my water pump. Sometimes when i check the coolant, the level is way down. I've been told to burp my system but i haven't gotten around to it. But for some reason i'm really thinking that its the water pump. What ya think?

and when i do change the water pump... do ya'll recommend a reverse rotation, hi flow, or just the stock one?? is there really a big difference between them??

I believe the stock pump is a reverse pump. Not completely sure though.

Start by burping the system. If the mechanic didn't take the time to properly set the timing, then I doubt he actually took the time to purge the air from the cooling system.
If you run hot at random times, then most likely it is some air.

If there is a definate pattern to when the temp goes up, and back down, then there are other things to look at.

Burp the systm first.

a high flow is ALWAYS better, I had a problem with my timing cover leaking into my oil, took me FOREVER to figure it out.

changed all the motor gaskets from intake to oil pan and it was still leaking. I didnt think i was ever going to figure it out. I took the block out took everything outta the block pistons, crank everything! used new rings and new bearings and put it back together then i started replacing other parts oil pan timing cover. the timing cover finally cured it. it drove me NUTS.

get a cooling system pressure tester and put that on the car, pump it up to 15lbs, and crawl under the car, and wait......

i tried this with mine but it was leaking from the inside of the timing cover down the timing chain and completly mixing wth the oil (didnt look like chocolate milk either, just looked like thin oil). id start with the pressure test and see where that takes you.

burp the system, put the front end about a foot up in the air and let it cycle, it'll allow the air to rise to the rad cap and release, and then reset your base timing to ten deg., being sure the spout is disconnected when checking the timing. After those booth fail i'd condier replacing the waterpump although i'm not well versed on those either.... good luck
