Interior experts here please
The dashes are a little different on the driver's side. The early ones have the fuse panel on the front left side of the dash and a smaller hole for the steering wheel. The 90-93 dashes had the fuse panel under the dash and a larger hole to accomidate the airbag. The fuse hole could be cut out but I dont know if the cover would attach properly or not. You could make a bracket to mount the fuse panel below the dash or get a 90-93 dash frame and swap it and just use the 90-93 trim. I dont know how the steering wheel trim would line up though.
A newer dash WILL NOT fit in an older car. I know this, because I did it. I have an 87 stang that I converted to a 92. The dashes are different. The frame is different for the dash. So if you replace everything, including the frame then swap the wiring onto it (LOTS of work).. it'll bolt right in. Mine wasn't too big of a problem as I replaced EVERYTHING in the 87 with the stuff from the 92 (wiring, complete interior (includes dash)... blah blah blah) and you don't notice all the differences until you try and stick something there, and it doesn't fit. Subtle differences like 87's didn't have the shoulder strap seat belts in the rear, 92's did, so I had to cut out the bracket and weld it in so now it has the shoulder belts, bumper stop for the door in non-existant in the 92, 87's are attached to the seatbelt, so had to modify that, the way the rear seats mount is different, so had to change that... blah blah blah... I have many'a hours into this conversion, and know my car inside and out, as I bought it as a total loss with no power-train, no rad support, and a crusty porno red interior (now black)
