Default FUEL PUMP WONT COME ON

My fuel pump died while I was checking my timing. Im only getting 6v at the fuel pump with the ignition on. I bought a new fuel pump relay and when I put it in the fuel pump began running even with the key out. I figured the new fuel pump reay was defective so I exchanged it for another. When I put that one in I was back to only 6v at the fuel pump. Whats goin on?

6v? A dead battery or a faulty volt-meter. There's no reason why it should only have 6 volts

Battery fully charged, keep in mind that I had 12v to the fuel pump with the first fuel pump relay. The problem though is that the fuel pump would stay on as long as it was plugged in even with the ignition off.

replace your ignition switch in the steering cloumn niw, before you get a fire, its cheap and kinda easy. The dealership does this free of charge

I checked the switch in the steering column and it is good. I put a voltmeter on the wiring harness where it plugs to the fuel pump regulator and read 12v with key on and 0v with key off. I tapped the fuel pump regulator with a screwdriver and the fuel pump came on but stayed on until it the relay got hot and burned up. Normaly when I turn my key to on I can hear the fuel pump for a couple of seconds and then it will stop until I start the car. What tells the fuel pump to shut off when rails reach pressure?

the computer has no means of measuring fuel pressure. it will come on for a second then shut off until the car is cranking or running.

replace the ignition switch and fuel pump relay if you can.

If not , run a 12volt hot to the pump with a 30amp fuse on it.

I think I've established that there is no problem with my fuel pump, fuel pump relay, or ignition switch. What other components could be to blame?
