yes most of the cost for taking a car to a shop to get the head gasket replaced is from labor. you have to take the entire top end off the car(intake manifold, heads, basicly everything from the top of the block up). its something you can do yourself fairly easily if you know what your doing.

RE: Question... don't get mad
when you do it the first time its good to have someone who knows what they are doing help you. if not, get a book like haynes or chilton's and it will show you step by step, and will also tell you all the torque specifications(very important)
