Default Timing Question

Okay, this may be a bit confusing but i hope you can understand what im trying to say, if not ill try to post a pic later...Sorry if im just retarded...I was looking at my "timing pulley" (cant remember the actual term) the other day and mine doesnt have any marks for setting the timing, i dont think. On the actual pulley there is only one notch going across it, and there is a stationary metal pointer thing that says TIME on it. I assume then that stock timing would be when the notch lines up with the metal pointer. Am i missing something or how am i supposed to set my timing?

It's called a harmonic balancer and you try to take some sandpaper to it to find the actual marks.
No the cut thats in it is not the mark you want.

The marks will be on the thin side of the balancer not the thick side were the wide Grove is cut out...

Rub some Wax of some kind on it and you'll be able to see those numbers.
