RE: 400 rwhp 5.0 carb
ive got an 83...sadly, there are a lot of crap parts in your car, if you insist on keeping the stock bottom end, i would at least change the cam(youre a flat tappet, not a roller) put some new heads on(this is critical, the most important step) if it still has the stock exhaust manifold, get rid of that for some headers. for that it would be best to get rid of the single exhaust and get a dual system going on. transmission needs to go, the 7.5 rear end needs to go, upgrade to the 5 lug while youre at that, and some disk brakes. subframe connectors wont make you go faster, but theyll make sure you dont fall apart, and really make an improvement. get rid of the crappy cylinder type coil, get rid of that ancient ford ignition. when replacing the headers, it would be a good time to think about a new starter, one of them reduction gear ones. the carb is fine, if you feel you must buy a new one, dont get anything bigger than a 650 cfm. the intake manifold must go, its max flow is around 4500 rpm. off the top of my head, i think that about covers it.

Do you want to stay with a 302 or would you go with a 351?.
I ask this because if you go 302 route then you will need to stroke it.
The more more cubes it has the easier it is to acheive this goal. If you stay 302 you will have to rev the crap out of it, 7000-8500 rpm.(you will need really good parts for this)
I would go with a 351 windsor to start out as it will make this power and do it at 6500 to 7000 rpm with the stock crank, saves money too.You would gain lots of torque as well.
Let us know what base engine you will want to stay with and we can go from there.

im not sure why but 83 is a bad year for hp on the mustang 302 its like 180hp, just be glad u dont a have a 4.2l v8 302 look alike found in 80, 81 and i think 82 had the choice of a a 4.2 or a 5.0 all early 80s 5.0s where rated badly till about 86 or 87, its probably due to all the smog stuff and possibly differant carbs and diff tbi systems, so eliminating all the crap is a good start, i say for cheap get a msd ignition set up where u can do away with that dura spark and entire ecu on the car, get a highrise intake and 4brrl carb of ur choice, electric fuel pump of ur choice and see what that does for u before u decide on a differant cam. i did most of this, i just got a old style points ditributor for 80 bucks a highrise torker II intake for 100 used and a electric fuel pump in place of the mechanical one and a holley 4 barrel from a friend free and it was a big differance. but no where close to 400hp,lol

are u sure??? like what kinda cam is pretty varied, intake and carbs are not that diff usally i just dont see how u can get 400hp on just those things when at best a 302 is rated at 225 crank hp, im all ears bro

bad info, right there. first off, there is no "lower" intake, just the intake manifold. heads would be an easy 20-50 hp, depending on whos head you go with, cam will pick up another 15, assuming you keep it streetable and dont totally kill your bottom end, 5-20 for the intake, 2 with the carb...so that leaves you sitting at around 250hp¿.

Looking to build the 302 currently, will have a stroker 351 in the works later.
I picked up a set of rods and forged pistons from a 89 stang for beans .
All smog bs will be gone.
Ok so ill go nice and simple.
Intake, I hear good on the Weiland stealth manifolds idle-6500, but many palces say it works well past 7000.
Headers, suggestions on a cheap tubular set for the stock heads that will bolt to AFR's later.
