it really only surges at idle once you hit like 1500-2000 it stops

yeah, its the weird motor thing on the side of the throttle body. Make sure you reinstall it in the exact position you took it off (it will go on upside down). You may have a vacuum leak. Popping through the intake is either a valve (not likely) or ignition (possible but it would have to be extremely retarded) timing issue or a lean condition. A vacuum leak will create a lean condition. Make sure you pulled the SPOUT (spark output. This is a grey jumper plug that runs from a wire off the ignition module and is usually a pink wire) when you reset your timing. This disables the computers ability to control spark advance and will keep you at a base timing.

BTW, the shaft of the distributor may be worn out, did it feel like it would wobble in the housing?

well i cleaned the iac valve today and it still surges any more ideas could i have damaged the distributor taking it apart.

no it didnt feel wobbly but i didnt pull out the spout when i set the timing will that really make it act this way?
