Default New rear

I am currently shoping for a new rear end for my 1991 lx that was orginally a 4cyc but currently has no motor no tranny no rear. What rear do you recommend? I was thinking of a 9inch but didnt kno what kind of work is involved to install this kind of rear? Is it bolt in or welded or do you need to change mounting points ?

They make a 9" that will just bolt in, very expensive. It would depend on what you are realistically gonna do w/ the car. Nothing too crazy a 8.8 would be fine

OK first what are your plans couple grand for the rear as I've seen advertised in the mags.

Locker, posi, same basic principle. A spool is for all out racing. No good for the street as it's like driving around w/ both axles welded together.

a locker "claims" to lock both wheels together, but most i have dealt with will release for normal street driving. Posi, or posi trac stands for positive traction. Usually there is a clutch pack in the differential that limits the slip. A spool, or mini-spool totally locks the two shafts together making is physically impossible for the two tires to rotate at different speeds. Posi, and most lockers are fine with everyday driving, but you will run into some problems with a spool, (i.e., turning) If you dont have a serious drag car then you can beef up an 8.8 to be plenty strong.

im Looking to build a 5.0 at like 350 hp for the first time and then after about a year i wanna strip it down and go bigger to mid fours coming close to 500. But i wanna use the same rear both times and are unsure if a 8.8 will be beefed up enough or should i jsut by a 9inch and never worry aobut it ?????
