351 heads on a 302??
Hi,
I'm installing a rebuilt 302 from Kragen into my daughter's 73 Mustang. Got it as a longblock (first time with Kragen). I have it installed and went to install the plugs and the don't fit. Now I think they put 351 heads on the 302 block. Does anybody know if this will work? Does anything have to be modified to make them work? How would I know if the rebuilder did any necessaty modifications?
Thanks in Advance,
Bob Schoner

RE: 351 heads on a 302??
Well, if it's an older 351 the firing order is different than the HO 5.0L , it has smaller (14mm I think) plugs. The head bolts are larger so you have to use bushings in the heads. If you bought a long-block they should have gotten the right cam etc for you so all you should have to worry about is the plugs. You may want to call them and get the details though. Other than the minor differences the heads are interchanged quite often, it's the supporting parts (cam, distributor, plugs, etc) that have to match the setup you have.

firing order is cam, dizzy and computer.
302 heads 351w heads same.
I have 1969 DO0E Heads 351 on my 1990 302 HO.
Head bolt bushings, $10 edelbrock summitt
Same head gaskets etc etc.
Plugs BIGGER, lawnmower type , thats what they used in 1969 man

Hi, Thanks for the quick response. Not sure what your concern is about firing order; I don't think the heads care what the firing order is. But, your comment about the cam makes me wonder if the lift is the same or do you have to match the cam to the heads to get the right lift?

RE: 351 heads on a 302??
Hi Again,
On a search I found a post from 2003 that talked about the bolts; it should be easy to check that out. However, the post mentioned that there is a difference in the water passage holes and the 351 heads must be drilled to make the passages work (about 5 holes 1/8"dia). Anybody have any experience with that?
Thanks in Advance.

RE: 351 heads on a 302??
Hi,
Thanks for the info on the bushings. I will look at the heads to see if they have them (or shouldered bolts). Will probably have to pull one bolt since the heads are on.
As usual these things happen just as I'm about to go out of town so I can't check til Sat.
Thanks Again,
Bob Schoner
