Default Distributor Help!!

Ok I recently bough 1 of the Gt-40 Crate engines from Summit. I have never done a dizzy install before. I am 99% positive I had the #1 piston at TDC. I go to start the car and it tries to start but won't. I tried advancing the timing and the more I advanced it the more it tried to start. I had it as far as I could advance it and it started for maybe 1-2 secs and died. I am 100% sure it's how I put the dizzy in. I did a search but really didn't find what I wanted. I want to get a better idea on what I should do before I go back out there and start working on it again. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks for your help!

you may be a tooth off or you 180* out, try turning it 180*. also there could be a bunch of things why it wont start after putting in a motor, i would go over everything and make sure its all hooked up correctly.

TDC, really doesnt matter. Having your rotor pointing at your #1 cylinder is just common practice, and some what of a courtesy for those who may own the car after you. Plus it helps you in the future find TDC.

Ok I decided to take the dizzy back out and redo the whole process all over. I took the #1 spark plug out. I took the dizzy out. I turned the crank by hand until I felt air being pushed out of the #1 cylinder. I then lined it up to 0. I put the dizzy in with the rotor pointing at #1. I tried to start it and it wouldn't even try to start this time. What am I doing wrong??? Thanks.

Put your motor at TDC accurately as you can. Then drop in your dizzy (distributor) with the rotor pointing at the #1 cylinder. Then look down at your crank degree markers. You should be at 0'. Roll back the crank until it has you at the 30' degree mark. Now if you put on your distributor cap at this point your rotor center should be pointing at one of the 8 terminals. If it doesnt. Pull out your dizzy, and repeat. Adjusting the dizzys base position everytime.
