Default gears AGAIN

I know this has been covered to death, but since i'm a newbie please bear with me.

I have a 1990 LX 5.0 with the AOT trans and 2.73 rear gears. Can I safely go to 3.55 gears without any Trans.problems?

Since you have on AOD, I'd go 3.73s instead. There should be any problems either, it'll just shift quicker.

with the AOD I would definitely recommend the 3.73's for the street and they won't hurt the tranny at all.

There actually IS a problem with doing that which will take me a sec to explain, so bear with me, for i have run into the same problem.

Well i have 3.08's in my car, and i was going to go to 4.10's. The problem I ran into was that my transmission was geared for the 3.08's. Which means my 1st and 2nd gear are already really short, just to get the car rolling, which is probly the same with your car, but then 3rd and on are really long. If i put those 4.10's in my car, my first gear almost wouldnt be there, same with second, I might as well start off in 3rd gear. So Im going to get a different transmission before I go and change the rear. I also decided to go with an entirely new heavy duty rear axle with 4.10's in it and posi, just so my car can take all the hole shots and burn outs.

Hey Roundman,

am i going to run into this problem? Should I maybe go with a set of 3.55's instead?

My 1st gear is pretty good and i cruise on the interstate running 60mph at 1400 rpm.

I don't think i'd mind running 16 or 1700 if it made it quicker off the line.
