Missing @ Full Throttle
I just bought a 94 Ranger 4.0 auto for my winter beater. It runs great, idles fine, but it misses kinda bad at full throttle. I cleaned the MAF, but its still doing it. Im thinking plugs and wires? Any ideas?
Definately start with a tune up. You have no idea what the other owners have done in regards to maintanence. A fuel filter would be a wise choice as well because a loss of adequate fuel volume from a restriction is a likely cause of high load, high rpm misfires. Not to mention how common things like this occur. You could also have an exhaust restriction. Unfortunately there is no solid method one without proper equipment can use to check your backpressure. You can look for things like an intake vacuum that doesn't drop quickly but this is not the most accurate thing in the world. Removing the exhaust can help in some cases but it only works if you can get the pipes completely out of the way of the manifolds and even then you run into issues with fuel management because your oxygen sensors see a lean condition and will make the computer fatten up the mixture enough to make it run crappy regardless.
Odds are that if it runs that well otherwise, it is likely just an issue with the plugs.......Do yourself a favor and buy Motocrafts. You can get them easily and they aren't expensive. Good luck, hope it runs better after a set of plugs
