If the clutch is engaging at the top of the pedal release then you have the cable adjusted to tight.
This means you are riding the release bearing and will wear it out very quickly.
Losen the tension on the cable so that the clutch is engaged about half way out.
There should be a tiny bit of play in the pedal when it all the way out... jiggle it and see.
