sorry another explorer ?
ok i know that everyone hates these questions but i have been reading for the past two hours and still don't know the difference in the bottem ends. i have heard that dropping the explorer motor in will not give me any gains, is that true? i have a 95 and the motor has 156000 on the clock. what i was wanting to do is, buy a 97 1/2 explorer motor from my brother in-law for 400. i was going to put the heads and intake on my block and refresh the explorer motor and add a cam. then when my motor started to go swap the blocks out. would these be a good idea or should i just put the heads and intake on then sell the rest? i would really like to keep the block because i know i am going to need it soon. sorry again but really need some advice.
i dont see why you couldnt just put a cam in the explorer engine to make it a 5.0 HO but then again the explorers have a lot more emissions stuff on them than the mustangs
block and bottom end wise the motors are the same... its really not that complicated.
the explorers run a different cam... swap that out
pre-97.5 explorer 5.0's had GT-40 heads and 8.8:1 compression. It is recommended to mill the heads .020 to bring them to 9:1
97.5-up explorers have gt-40P heads. dropping these onto your motor will raise the compression ratio to 9.5:1 and result in more power due to compression, not flow.

awesome. the motor is out of a 97 1/2 so it has the gtp heads. do i need these milled. i know that i will need the different headers. what cam do you suggest with those heads and the intake
I wouldnt mill those heads unless you want higher compression that 9.5:1. I'd wouldnt get anything over .520, then your gonna be getting close. Definatly ugrade those springs on the P heads, they are only good for about .500 lift, so beef those up so your on the safe side.

So is the 97 1/2 explorers have 9.5:1? If the blocks are the same minus cam...or is it just the pistons that would need to be swaped along with the cam to make it a H.O.?
