Default Steering problem?

I was reading the other thread about 245's up front, and it got me wondering. If 245's aren't too wide, then why does my steering feel wierd? I can hear a rubbing noise, and the steering wheel shakes when I either turn to sharp going forward, or turn (sometimes not even that much) backing up. I have an '85, so are the clearance issues different than '88-up.

the fender flares are widened in 90+ models specificaly to fit the bigger 225 tires

i believe the older stangs came with 195 or 205's stock upfront

Well, not to my knowledge. It doesn't look lowered, but it bugs me having these wierd problems with other people saying 245's work just fine because i love the look of them.
