Default Why do autos dyno low?

As soon as I get my exhuast and trickflow kit installed i am going to get it tuned and dynoed. Just had a question. On alot of peoples dyno results I see some1 say something like "nice numbers for an auto." Do auto's dyno less because hp gets lost in the trans or what. I am worried I will be disappointed in my dyno results due to my aod.

Thanks,
Jimmy

Yes...autos eat up more horespower to operate than do manual transmissions. The difference is a few percentage points.

A stock AOD and TQ converter will eat HP like a fat kid eats twinkies.....okay, maybe not that bad but it does eat up some power.

I am expecting somewhere around 280 ish to the wheels. Originally I was expecting around 300 to the wheels but most ppl w/ the tf kit are only getting 270 - 280 which seems low.

do you know how torque converters work? this helps in understanding why they are less efficient. the basic reason is that the transmission, and in turn the rest of the driveline, never quite catches up to the speed of the engine.

try howstuffworks if you want a quick overview of how torque converters work.

Not only do they eat up more HP, but the first gear in the trans isnt as steep as it is in the 5 spd, which = less torque.

If this is so then why are autos known for being able to rape manuels off the line?
