So im driving today and hear this loud as hell squeal and my engine starts sputtering and smoking. I pull off to the side and notice the belt is frayed and the main pulley on the bottom is like froze. Had to have the car towed home and am pretty pissed off still its like god doesnt want me to have this car. The question is did my engine lock up?

You wont be able tio turn the engine over by hand. Try spinning your other pullies and see if they free spin. If not then theres your culprit.

Since your car is home, go outside and cut the old belt off. Try to start the car with NO belt.... if it starts, your fine!

your "main pulley on the bottom is like froze" because thats the crank... you SHOULDNT be able to turn it by hand.

once you get the belt off you can check all of the pullies by hand to see which one, if any, have play in them.

Might be silly but.........Could your a/c of locked up and done that? Had that happen on my wifes truck a few years back.

whats the condition of the belt? what was smoking?

Smoke is prolly becasue the smog pump stoped spinning or the belt burning up either way I dont think it froze unless u had no oil in it.

Me and a buddie of mine were driving on the freeway in his 87 and the smog pump locked, smoked the belt, etc. Had it towed back, I threw a new pump and belt on there and he was back in biddness for under $100.



Also one morning, I started my Ranger and herd a few thuds, and some skreeching and some smoke, I killed it and popped open the hood...






Damm rat!!! It took out my brand new gates belt. The worst part was the smell that was comming out of the hood for the next few days.

two nights ago my smog pump went... killed the belt... got towed home by my dad, went out yesterday bout the new pump and belt and ist good as new... just go out and see if any of the pullys have play in them... in and out... up and down... anything... if they do... thats a problem.
