1. set timing to 14*
2. replace the spark plugs and coil.
3.take a broom and but the gas pedal to the floor, i bet you can still move your throttle another 1/2 an inch.
your ecm needs the 1/2 inch or even a centimeter, it dont matter, as your tps voltage will ready by this and the higher wot voltage up to 4.85, the better.
HEADS, STOCK GEARING AND AOD is what kills you.

Bump your timing to 14 degrees! That's worth a huge SOTP difference. Check your throttle cable slack and get some gears and a converter.

HE HAS 3.73's

Has anyone mentioned gears yet? I really think you should get some gears. Maybe get a nice MSD ignition. You may also want to get underdrive pulleys and lose the cats to help the air flow better. Oh, and don't forget gears. Definately need gears.

Dump in some premium gas and push the timing to 16 degreed BTDC. Toss on a cold air intake as well to reduce the intake temps. Or at least remove the air silencer if you haven't already. As stated above, the slack in the throttle cable is a killer, and can be fixed in only a few minutes (at least a temp fix.)
You should be able to tell whether or not you have a shift kit. Are the shifts firm and fast or are they a bit softer? Even before I was pushing all teh extra HP, it would still throw you back in your seat a little when it shifted 1-2 and 2-3 in my AODE covnertible with 3.73s and a shift kit.
For $300 you should be able to find a nice nitrous system. That will give some nice HP / TQ increases
