jthorpe, try using a screwdriver and lay it across both sides of the solenoid to start the car (make sure you aren't in gear if it's a manual!!!) If it starts, the solenoid is bad;if not, it's probably a battery issue.

I wouldn't necessarily say he eliminated the battery issue. A lot of thing could come into play. How thick were the jumper cable gauges? What shape where they in? What quality are they? Also have to think about how good of a connection he had...as far as corosion, etc. Do the lights, radio, clock, etc all die out when trying to start it or do they seem fine?
When I just recently tried to jumpstart mine to move it to the garage, it wasn't working. It helped a little and the lights got brighter, etc. But there just wasn't enough juice to crank her (even when it was hooked up to an LT1. Nothing but clicking. But when I swapped cables to a bigger set, she fired right up.
Try a completely different battery or a different set of cables. Or maybe even a set of cables along with a jump pacl

I agree with Samseed, could still be the battery, if it's clicking to me that means that the solenoid is engauging. if you don't have a good pair of jumpers use two sets.
