Yes, SD is EFI it uses they density of the air rather than the mass of air as measured by the MAF. There are several diferences in the way the eec coomputes fuel. The engines themselves are interchangeable, it depends on what you are asking specifically....

go with the 89. 86 had ****ty heads and true flat top pistons so you would only be able to put on trickflow twisted wedge heads without changing or modifying the pistons. 86 also had e6 heads wich.. if you can believe it.. are worse then e7 heads.

excluding the heads,they areabout the same.
e7te's are just a an ok stock head, but the e6's are on the verge of being junk
i'd take the '89 all day long, i think they are the strongest of all years (personal opinion from 5 different cars)
