250amp alternator?

250amp alternator?
Found a 250amp alternator on ebay.
wondering if it would cause any electrical problems beyond
needing to upgrade to the 4 gauge supply cable?
or should I just stick with a 200amp one?
need as much power at idle as possible since I figure with lights on
electric fan runing and radio blasting I'm pulling around 70amps even at idle.
200amp alt will supply 90-100amps at idle but 250 should be well above that.
I shouldnt hurt anything with the higher amps in the EEC or anything would it?

RE: 250amp alternator?
Just remember that nothing is free...if you are generating more amps, then you are losing a bit of HP.
Correct me if I am wrong...from what I have learned though is that you will have the potential of 250 AMPs. The alternator will only put out what is needed up to its max output. So if you are drawing 70 amps at idle...then your alternator will be putting out only 70 amps.
It's amazing...my 400 amp welder needs a 6 cylinder to run it...hehe

RE: 250amp alternator?
I have well over 1000 amps in my trunk, and with that going full blast (Probibly pulling like 500 watts because after that it will hurt your ears), and more lights (fogs on as well) my lights didn't dim with the 75 amp stocker. I can't imagine 250 amps would be needed unless you are just sitting still for some ungodly amount of time.
Headlights pull probibly10 amps, fan will pull5 amps(Guessing there), which leaves like like 75 amps for you stereo with the 200. 75 amps comes out to 900 watts for your stereo. I think that would be sufficient, but if you are running ALOT of stereo then you could need it. I just couldn't see much more then that going in a vert.

RE: 250amp alternator?
you know, im kind of in the same perdickament (sp?). i did plan on putting a 2400 watt amp in my gt, but i figured out it would take around $600 just to make the car capable of handleing that power, so i think im going to move down to about 1200 watts. but i plan on upgrading my alt to a 200 amp unit, not to big but not to small and should handle my amp and lights. is deffinately say that even just a 3g unit (130 amps) would sufficient for your car if you dont plan on having more than say800 watts for a stereo.a buddy of mine has an 88 GT (whom i have talked about a lot) and hes got an 800 watt amp powering 4 12's off the stock alt. he did just add a cap, which seemed to help a lil but the car does just fine. at idle with the stereo off his volt gauge sits inbetween the top and middle notches. his lights dodim slightly but nothing terrible. RE: 250amp alternator?
my fan pulls 40!!!+ amps............
at idle a 130amp 3G ( what I have on there now ) only makes about 65amps at idle
add in the underdrive pullies and it's only making about 50amps due to slower rpms.
so my fanload aloneis pulling max load on the 3G by itself at idle. Turn on the radio
or anything else and I show a discharge and get all kinds of phucked up surging idle issues
from the voltage dropping.
I'll just go with the 200amp one, they advertise 90-100 amps at 800rpm idle
on those untis, so it should be able to keep up.

RE: 250amp alternator?

and besides that............ no one answered my question on top of that
"Will a 250amp alternator hurt anything?" ..... didnt see that answered by ANY one.
thanks for all the NON-help, lol
