Good advice if that happened. It wouldn't entirely surprise me if a blown compressor is the culprit.

I have been through that on a previous car. Replaced the entire friggin a/c system, and the car got totalled by a drunk while it was parked in front of my house.

ya that dood's in jail for that still. cops through the book at him. He hit 5 other cars on my street before my bonneville stopped him.. ha ha jerk

noooo do not remove the compressor, if you release the refrigerants you can get fined VERY HEAVILY, dont take matters into your own hands with something of this nature you need an EPA lisence to work with it, take it toa shop(i have a refrigerant lisence so i know about this stuff)

how much do shops normally charge to evacuate it?

if I did in fact have an o-ring blow put as i suspect, is it likely that I had most of the refridgerant already leave the system?

there are most likely no o-rings on there, its aluminum tubing and if you heard a hissing than your r-12 most likely leaked out and your system was run dry thus causing the compressor to burn up...and that could make it stop spinning, thus making the clutch shatter......

you could always hit the release valve on the compressor and see if any thing comes out, just don't tell you local epa guy.

Default RE: a/c compressor troubles

Guys any help here is MUCH appreciated here and I am open to other suggestions. I need to head to bed (midnight here). If you look at Iceman's pic of his engine compartment you can more easily visualize what happened. In the very front and center of the a/c clutch you will see a circle that sticks out in front of the a/c clutch. the filler area inside of that circle is where everything melted/blew out/ disintegrated. The pulley isn't going to turn very well.

I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as possible. I don't have a whole lot to spare right now.

Thanks a ton!
