Default Oil Consumption

I have posted about this before but maybe some of you new guys can shed some more light on the subject. My car is blowing oil out of the tailpipes. So bad that if you hold your hand in front of the pipe at idle, little spots of oil will stick to your hand. It uses 1 qt per 1000 mi. At WOT, it smokes but it is black smoke. I have always been under the impression that black is fuel, blue is oil. Oil pressure is great and car has 83,000 mi. I really want to do an HCI upgrade, but not if my bottom end is in bad shape. Does this sound like oil getting by the rings or valve seals or possibly some other cause? Im pretty frustrated with it and any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well dude, its either coming from the intake/exhaust valve stems or the bottom end. I would do a compression test first to determine if the bottom end is a contributor. If your compression is near 150psi hitting even and building within about 5 hits, odds are you need some heads - bad. Bottom line, you are going to need some shop equipment and do some base engine testing in order to diagnose this problem accurately.

I would say that in 3000 miles my car eats about 2 quarts, I think alot of 5.0s do this,IMO, i know i puff out a lil blueness at higher rmps, i know thats not good either but I'll run her till she blows then fix it. Are you sure that it aint carbon chunks coming out the pipes, bladk smoke means richness(excess fuel) blue smoke is oil. I tend to think lighter oil burns faster too.Correct me if i am wrong though, just my thoughts.

Forgot about the PCV system. OOPS. Eliminate it for a while and recheck. According to Ford, up to 1qt per 1500 miles is normal.......

Please don't eliminate the pcv, this could very well make your problems worse.

I have a PCVpage on my site. It is worth the time to read it. Maybe I will post it when I get home, but I can't get to my site from work.

Most likely the pcv is the source of your oil problems, and usually it is an easy fix.

As long as he provides a way forthe crankcaseto breathe and leaves no vac leak, he won't hurt or worsen anything. If your PCV hose is soft or oil saturated - very likely the valve is toast and not preventing oil entry or your blowby is "overpowering" the function of the valve plunger.

Could also be some faulty valveguide seals. That can cause the same problem.

not sure if mine does or not, i no it goes thru a quart every 4k miles, but that was because of a good one inch piece of gasket missing from the valve covers. its getting all new gaskets so well see what it does from then on
