Default Clutch problems??????

Ok my buddy just got through putting a new/stock 5.0 back into his car.(91 50 htchbck) He explained it to me as you could start the car with the clutch out. You couldn't put it in gear though running or not? It just grinds when he tries. He installed a new clutch, pressure plate and had the flywheel resurfacedwhen the motor was out. Any suggestions I could give him to try would be great- - -this has got me stumped?

if it doesn't go into gear while the car is off, he's got some problems internally.

+1 matt, that would suck if thats the case.If its while its running, it sounds to me like its not disengaging enough to let the tranny shift into gearIMO, maybe theres too much slack in the cable, is he using the stock cable? it could be outta adjustment, pull up on the pedal and it should click, if it does then the self-adjuster just worked, do that until it stops, if thats the case.
