A block tester (what your buddy is bringing over) is a great tool, but because of the way it works (chemical reaction) it is not the most accurate thing on the planet. I say go to the zone and get a pressure tester. This is a rad cap with a hand pump on it. Install it and start your vehicle. If the pressure jump up - you have a bad head gasket. Otherwise if it climbs up slowly, (same rate as the engine temp, yeah I know you don't have a gauge but you have to wing it) you likely don't have a bad gasket. Using this in conjunction with the block tester is going to be the most comprehensive. A bubble and a bad head gasket will act the same in regards to pressure increase.
I would use the tester to find your leak, fix that and then move on. If you have a leak at a high point in the system, you will fill the system with air each time the engine cools off.

i got mine from a snap on truck. its still early, drive around some shop area's and see if there is a snap on truck. even matco or mac should have at least 1 on their truck too.

But of course, Ebay is always a good choice
