Default ignition problem maybe?

ok, so car runs fine below 3000 rpms, but once i get up around 3500 or higher it seems to be missing very badly... i dont know if spuddering is the right word but deffinatly seems to have a bad miss of some sort... this causes small backfires in the exhaust(no cats, im sure that makes it a little more noticeable). i figure that since its backfiring(there very small, but still) its not a fuel problem and must be an ignition problem? am i assuming correctly? or could that still be a fuel problem. i have a good idea of what may be causing this, but want to see what some of you think 1st.

either dist. or ignition. Have you fooled with the rocker arms at all?

Im thinking it’s the distributor and wires. And yes weve messed w. the rockers. I just re did head gaskets, and had to get new heads(still e7), and got them remaned. We got them back and the rockers were on but loose… followed the chiltons and torqued them to spec.

i wanna assume its the distributor and wires... i think that because of the small backfires that its obviously getting fuel, so that would make spark the problem.

when we were putting the motor back together after the head gaskets the timing light wasnt working... we thought it was cuza it, but then clamped around a differant wire, and it worked... then put it back and it worked on #1. and my cap/rotor has a little corosion on it. im almost certain these two things are the problem. hopefully a new distributor and some new good wires will do the trick. only reason i question that it could be something else is because it never did this before. just wanted some other outside opinions on it all.

sounds like running lean or plug wire is off or vacuum leak
