Default GT40

I was told my car hadgt-40 heads on it when I bought it and yesterday I found out that I have stock e7 heads. I have been doing research and noticed there are different types of gt-40 heads like gt-40, gt-40p, etc. I have BBK shorty headers now and I want to know will they fit all the GT-40 heads or are there certain ones I need to get?

IIRC, the GT-40P heads were designed for the Explorer. They don't take the same exhaust as the regular 40 and 40X designs

So I need to look for gt-40 or gt-40x stamped on the head?

The GT40 heads will accept the same headers as the E7 heads. The P heads have a different spark plug angle and require special headers to clear on the plugs on the drivers side. The BBK headers you have should be fine.

And just ot add to this, you CAN get ordinary GT-40 heads off an Explorer...just make sure it's before 1997 1/2. After that they changed to GT-40P

Most 5.0 headers fit the following:
E7 [stock on 5.0 HO's]
GT40 [came on 93-95 Cobras and 5.0 Exploders up to 97.5; 3 verticle bars on the end of the heads
GT40Y [aluminum]
GT40X [also aluminum, flow more than the Y heads]

As mentioned, the P heads are from 97.5-01 5.0 Explorer's/Mountaineers and have a relocated spark plug angle. You can "make" almost any header work, but unless you go w/ shorty plugs and 90* boots, you will most likely burn plug wires. MAC and FRPP make headers that clear the plugs on the P heads.

Up to ~.500 lift, but that's stock for stock. Remove the thermactor bumps on the GT40's and they'll outflow the P's across the charts; and the Gt40's have larger exhaust valves=more potential.

Go with GT40's, not GT40P's. I think reasons have been pretty much covered above, but they're right. You can also find em on Ebay for relatively cheap. Also check corall.net classifieds, they've got tons of stuff
