Default 5sp. vs. AOD

Aside from driving preference, I prefer to drive a 5sp., what does everyone think about the quality/service- life of each stock trans on 87-93 stock 5.0. I know with the proper upgrades each tranny could be built to last, but what's your opinion. Would anyone steer away from a car with either, my buddies got a 88 w/AOD+ shift kit and has had no problems ,but others I talk to don't think the auto is wortha @#$%.Opinions please?

We've seen the auto vs. manual tranny debate in here way too many times. Regardless of how people feel about autos... a quality automatic tranny with a quality valve body and coverter is one tough setup to beat, especially in bracket racing.

Thanks for the opinions ,so if the stock auto was matched to a motor pushing about 225-300 hp. upgrades should be done to converter, bands valve-body? For fun driving I agree, can't beat a 5sp. imo.

If I had to start with a stock AOD / AODE.. I would first get a valvebody (or at least a shift kit if that's all i could afford.) That will give you firmer and harder shifts. After that, if I had money left over I would get a nice 3000 stall converter. That would give better launches. Finally, the rebuild / bands. That will keep it from flying apart, lol.

I used to have an aod in my fox and it would run the same 1/4 mile over and over and over and over. It was cake.
