Default rev limiter

Can anyone tell me how to kill my rev limiter on an 89 LX with 331? The rev limiter kicks in at the normal rev for a 302 and its killing me racing. Any suggestions?

rev limiter whats that??? mine never had one so i can't help ya..... i know whata rev limiter is BTW and i THINK they make chips that change it, and a dyno tune would be able to fix it i'm sure, but i don't know if there is a way for you to just go out and change it on your own

You can get a tune and have it removed. It's fairly fast and simple to do. I guess my only question is why? Doesn't it kick in around 6200 or so? Why would you want to rev past that? I would imagine you're way out of your powerband by then, unless you're talking about the top end of your last gear (in other words, running out of gear before the end of the race.)

I don't know what you have for mods (besides the 331) but you could run into many problems gonig too high...anything from engine damage to simple floating valves.

6al box...FTW!!! set the pill just a little over where you shift, so if you do miss a gear...you still won't over rev the motor

Have you ever dyno tuned it in each gear tosee if you are still in your powerband when shifting that high? I'm just curious how far it extends. I always imagined that even with a 331, it would sharply fall off near the 5k mark. Sure, you cna do it, but I don't see the point unless you know that you are still pulling strong. Else you're risknig engine damage while actualyl slowing yourself odwn and losing power.

I wouldn't be shifting much past the 6250 mark when racing, and yes it is on top end, mainly 4th, but its that little bit extra that gives you what you paid for.
Some of the other mods are a tremec 500, 3.73 gears, mac heads, bbk headers and then of course the other bolt ons. Thanks for the info by the way.

...and no I haven't ever dyno'd it. They tell me it cost around a grand to do and I don't have that money anymore. I sure want to though.

I know what you mean about the top end, lol. With my 3.73s I actually redline right around 120 MPH. That's redline and not the rev limiter though. Still sucks either way
