WTF?????

RE: WTF?????
On a chevy I would... Remove the inspection cover, unhook the starter motor from power, engergize the solenoid and look to see if its binding... Any chance the bell housing is cracked or something?
I've never messed with my Ford's starter, but my AMC uses the Ford setup and the test should be do-able.

RE: WTF?????
i looked at the bell housing when i had it off and didnt see no crackes and it look fine. i think its autozone, but i have used them and didnt have a problem, donno. it sounds fine when its starting it just doesnt disengague quick enough. i have been told its the starter, also been told its the flywheel holding it up. ??????

RE: WTF?????
Well... Pull the cover and watch what happens... I *do* recommend you disconnect the starter motor itself though.
I admit that autozone stuff is hit and miss, but 3 in a row with the exact same problem is unlikely, unless they gave you the wrong starter the first time and keep exchanging it for the same wrong part # (maybe for a truck or something?).

RE: WTF?????
i have looked at the starter without the inspection plate, it engagues fine, spins the flywheel, the car starts and the pinion on the starter just spins with the flywheel for a few seconds. it sounds like the motor of the starter cuts off but it just doesnt pull the pinion back immediatly, causing it to "free" spin on the flywheel.
