Best Top End Build
Looking to find "the best bang for the buck" top end build (H/C/I)
I have been reading on the never ending battle between AFR/Edelbrock/Trick Flow heads but I open to any suggestions keeping in mind that my 89 5.0 is not gonna be dedicated to the track, but rather to the road each day still.
I saw a few replies mention trick flows top end kit just falling shy of 300 hp ... would that be the one which is said to be a 350 hp kit in Summit magazine, etc ?
Mac Off Road H
Flowmaster Catback

RE: Best Top End Build
Horsepower TV did a build using the trickflow top end and thats the reason i did not buy it. They were hoping to get over 300 RWHP but they fell short...they landed around 285 i think. But out of all the other kits if i had to choose id want a trickflow....

Your best bet would prolly be to peice one together. Get some good flowing heads, AFRs are up in the top....You can always get em poreted too. Get a nice cam to match, custom grind you'll prolly get the most outof, and a nice good flowing intake, trickflow street heat would bee good, also a real gt 40 intake....There are tons of combingations you couldgo with. But dont forget the supporting mods, like injectors, TB, MAF, headers, lifters, pushrods, gaskets, etc.....The list goes on. You can put together a nice HCI for around 2500, but the other things you'll need are prolly gonna be around another grand......
And dont forget gears, i'd get some 3.73 if 5spd and some 4.10's if auto....Gears ARE the best bang for your buck...

RE: Best Top End Build
I definately understand what you are all saying about the benefits of piecing together the whole entire set up but im 18 years old...been around vehicles a few years now...taught myself everything I know but cylinder head specs and cam specs is something that I am trying to learn with the help of anybody on here
Another idea I have seen is to pick up a set of GT-40 heads from a mid-late 90's explorer from the junk yard and have them rebuilt, port & polish, etc but how good of flow are they capable of and is there any advantage to cost going that route?

i would go with the holley systamax kit if i were going to have to buy a kit. in reality though i would buy my own stuff but thats just me.
