You can, but do you really want to have to take everything apart twice? Get a nice double roller set, might as well do it right while you've got the stuff apart anyway. What cam you putting in?

take it apart twice? not sure what u mean.
everything is apart and im trying to decide on a new cam. RPM range from about 1500 to 5500 to 6000.
its goin on my 331 stroker with an auto w/ a 2500-3000stall. its gonna driven about 3 days a week and taken to the track every once in a while.
i got a Edelbrock Performer RPM manifolds, Edel. RPM heads, cai, 70mm tb, 75mm Pro-M, 30lb'ers, shorty equals, and now i got 2 get the cam to complete it all.

also will the stock distributor work with the new cam? i will have a msd box hooked to the distributor.

Stock distributor will work fine, but YOU MUST replace the distributor gear. If not there's an extremely good chance that it will strip, and you'll be in a world of hurt. You can get a new FRPP one from Summit for $25. What I meant w/ the timing is that taking off the timing cover is a pain in the butt process, you're going to want to replace your timing set anyway (how many miles on the engine? You probably already do), so might as well do it while the cover is already off, instead of having problems later on and having to disassemble again. Also, it's a peace of mind factor. If something happens to that old stock thing it's not gonna be pretty...
