You need a press to get the gear off and on. Make sure you line up the holes when pressing it back on the first time, otherwise you will be doing it all over again. If it is just a bit off then the pins will still go in.Definitely not a fun job, but should only take 20-30 minutes

this is the exact reason , I reccomend replacing the entire unit.
