Default GT40 vs. GT40P Heads

Hey guys, I'm looking to build a 5.0 for my car and i have been doing some reading on the heads that came on 96-2001 ford explorers. From what i have read so far, on the 96 explorer they came with GT40 heads and intake, almost identical to the cobra heads and intake in 1993. However the GT40p heads and intake were from 1997-2001, which are much easier to find. So far I understand that the spark plug angle on the gt40p heads is slightly different and requires special headers to get them to fit in a fox body mustang. From flow charts that i have looked at, the gt40p heads flow a little better than the regular GT40's.

Which heads are better to use? I have a block out of a 92 bored to 306, looking to use gt40 or gt40p with the matching intake off an explorer with a 65mm throttle body.

If the GT40p heads are the way to go, what headers fit? and what cost difference and i looking at?

Thanks for the the help guys,

Callan

i dunno black pearl but for callan if your going to be buying headers either way grab the P's since they ARE better heads. now if you want to get those ported that would be even better (but can be quite costly)

i would minimally recommend you getting a valve job and if they have decent equip at the shop have them do some machine porting/bowl work. that would be pretty inexpensive and will definately help them breathe better

Just a littly FYI, there are tons of tech articles, writeup's, Q&A's, etc. on the net about this. A google search ora search on the forumsshould bring up alot of it.

go with gt 40's and you wont have to worry about header positioning.

gt40s and p's are great but by the time u port them to flow worth a damn ur up to ur eyes in $$$. Dont get me wrong i love iron heads but im not gonna spend 1grand on them when i could get some alum that would flow closs to them for the same price.

GT40P FTW!! I've got FRPP stainless headers. I don't have any positioning problems.

MAC makes a P specific header too, they fit perfect with the P heads.
