I feel like an *** for asking this, but here goes...
I've owned several 5.0's, but all were stick. Right now I have two '86 Capri's, both 5 speeds, so I bought another '86 Capri with an AOD to add to the pack. It was a POS and is being totally restored. I never drove the car... I just towed it to my garage and started dismantling it. I have an '88Hyundia Accent "beater" with an auto. The shift gate reads L-2-D-N-R-P. Sometimes to get the most out of the small motor, I drop the shifter into L... runit to redline, click it into 2nd... run it to redline, click it into D... hold it to the floor and then it goes into OD on it's own. My AOD Capri came with some crappy aftermarket shifter with the shift gate missing, so I don't even know what a stock shift gate looks like. SoI order a B&M "Hammer" shifter for it and the shift gate reads 1-D-O/D-N-R-P. I'm like WTF??? I always thought an AOD had 1-2-D-O/D and I'd be able to shift it just like my Hyundia. THEN I start seeing threads talking about shifting AOD's from 1 to D then back to 1 then to D again and I'm like... "What is THIS garbage all about?" They say it's the only way to get it to hold 2nd to redline... I've never heard of anything like that before.I've also read that shiftingthat way will kill the transmission. Every automatic car I've ever driven (Vega, Cavalier, Escort, Probe, F-150, E-450, Colt and the above Accent) have all shifted normally... hold it to redline then click it up to the next gear and so on. So why does the Ford AOD have to be shifted in such a "Micky-Dick" way!!!! Will someone clear all this up for me? I've never driven a5.0 with an AOD before in my life, so my questions are... (1) Why is the AOD this way? And (2) What is the proper way to shift one at the track and get it to run to redline in all gears, IF IT CAN EVEN BE DONE?

i had one in my 88 thunderbird i had years ago... you put it in first run it till redline shift todrive then back to first immediatleyand it stays in second run it till redline then shift it back up to drive and it goes in third run till redline then shift up.... i lost alot of races until someone told me this...

I've never owned an aotomatic Mustang but the AOD in my taxi goes P-R-N-OD-D-1. I don't understand the whole 1-d-1-d thing either to me it sounds like they're trying to destroy the transmission. I've never done any real racing though not yet anyway. Just some street racing back in the day but I always had a stick.

if you're gonna shift an auto like a manual, you might as well drop a manual in it..

ok the 90 w/AOD i have shows 1 then d then od if you put the shifter in 1 it stays in 1 won't shift so at whatever rpm your stupid enough to shift to 2nd you have to bump the shifter to d after shift at 4800 rpm on stock cars at least mine it shifts into drive or 3rd whatever to go to od the shifter then has to be in the od spot in auto mine shifts into 2nd at 5200 and 3rd at 4800 sometimes i'll pull it onto 1 and wind it out a little bot with the stock gears it'll never see over 4800 in 2nd through the 1/4 no how

ok, the 90 w/AOD I have shows first, then drive, then over-drive. If you put the shifter in first, it stays in first and won't shift. so at whatever rpm you decide to shift into second, you have to bump the shiffter to drive when the car reaches 4800 rpm it shifts into 3rd or drive. If you would like it to stay in second longer then you have to pull it back down into first. To get to over-drive you have to put in the od position. w/ stock gears, you'll never reach 4800 rpm in second through the 1/4 mile anyhow.
damn, it does look better. my thirtenn year-old typed it.

The lack of responce to this thread is blowing my mind. As many guys out there that have AOD's and this is all the feedback I"m getting. C'mon... what does everyone with an AOD do, just put it in drive like an old lady and let the crap shift where it wants to? Or is there a better way, like a full manual valve body that can be installed?
