Harmonic Balancer 28oz on a foxbody?

RE: Harmonic Balancer 28oz on a foxbody?
Dude listen to the guys. You CANNOT swap out the balancers on those engines. Pre 1981 302s/351s used a 28.2 oz balancer with a 28.2 oz flywheel, and after that they switched to the 50 oz balancers and 50 oz flywheels. I have a 351 in my 87 right now with the wrong flywheel in it. It needs a 28.2 oz and has the 50 oz with a 28 oz balancer. TRUST me on this one. Would you like a video of the engine and shifter vibrating like crazy? Put one in your car if you want to, but you're gonna sling it apart. I've already started an oil leak, and the tailshaft seal on my tranny is leaking something terrible.Everything has less than 2000 miles on it.All from the right balancer but wrong flywheel. Like I said, go ahead and try it if you want, but you'll find out real quick that it's gonna ruin your car.
You might can find an aluminum flywheel to cut weight, but switching to the WRONG sized balancer is gonna shake your car apart before destroying the engine/tranny.

seriously when my rubber pushed a little bit...it vibrated really bad...your valve train will snap into teeny tiny pieces if you do a 28oz hb...
there are a few people who posted, and you should listen to them....

Grabbem is right. I'm telling you from personal experience what will happen. Mine is a ticking timebomb right now. I have not driven it but once since I bought it because of that flywheel. I know you are talking about balancers, but one wont work correctly without the other. So same difference. So ixnay on that idea. It sure ain't a good one.[&:]

Sees how much you guys know. Certified tech dont mean engine designer. It just means someone has told someone how to put the square peg in the square hole.Which is helpful, but you cant argue physics. All 302's are near identical. Why would you lighten the balancer on the roller motor?

All 302s are N-O-T identical. PRE 1981 models USE A 28.4 OZ BALANCE AND FLYWHEEL. POST 1981 models USE A 50 OZ. BALANCE AND FLYWHEEL. GO READ UP SOME MORE. Jesus Christ you ask for opinions and help and when we tell you what will happen you basically say we are stupid. Screw it man. Putone in your car. Dont come back in here in a week and cry that your drivetrain is laying on the ground under the car in tiny pieces.

Directly from the Professional Products website:
Fits Early SB Ford
Our SB Ford dampers are the most universal dampers made. The early style harmonic damper fits all 1980 and earlier 289/302/351W/351C/351M/400 engines which utilize the 28.4 oz. in. c'weight. The bolt-in weight can be removed if required.
Fits Late SB Ford
The late style damper has a 50 oz. in. counterweight and is suitable for all '81 and later 5.0L engines.

RE: Harmonic Balancer 28oz on a foxbody?
If you disassemble a 302ho and put it on a balancer, it will call for 50oz balance weight. The INTERNALS are literally weighted that way. By placeing the proper balance at the ends of the crank you eliminate the harmonic vibratins that would be cause between the front main and rear main bearing locations. You CAN NOT use a 28oz imbalance flywheel and HB on a motor that calls for a 50oz imbalance. You CAN however FIT a 28oz HB and flywheel on a crank that calls for a 50oz imbalance. However, to get the motor to run properly, you will not be able to use the 28oz/50oz combo
If you put a 28oz HB and flywheel on a 50oz imbalance motor... you WILL cause vibration issues!
And if your going to think that I dont know what im talking about... you need to log off the forum and go **** yourself!
